Another Christian Symbol Removed?

The
goddess Pomona – the goddess of gardens and
fruit trees – is holding in her arms a sheaf of grain,
an orange, a lemon, an avocado and a few grapes to represent
Los Angeles County’s agriculture. She stands on the
shore of the Pacific Ocean with the San Gabriel Mountains
in the background.
The engineering instruments – the triangle
and the caliper – relate to the industrial construction
complex of the County and Los Angeles’ vital contribution
to the conquest of space.
The Spanish galleon is the San Salvador,
which Cabrillo sailed into San Pedro Harbor on October 8,
1542.
The tuna represents the fishing industry
of Los Angeles County, and the championship cow, Pearlette,
represents the dairy industry.
The Hollywood Bowl indicates the cultural
activities, while the two stars represent
the County’s motion picture and television industries.
The cross represents the influence of the
church and the missions of California.
Oil derricks are symbolic of the oil fields
that were discovered on Signal Hill.
The
words “County of Los Angeles California” surround
the seal.
(The
County seal was designed by former Supervisor Kenneth Hahn,
drawn by Millard Sheets and adopted by the Board of Supervisors
March 1, 1957.)
Note:
James K. Hahn is the current mayor of Los Angeles and the
son of Kenneth Hahn. |
Another
Symbol of Christianity Expunged from Public Life and Government
Institution?
Recently
the ACLU threatened a law suit if Los Angeles doesn't remove the
cross from the official seal of Los Angeles County
The
Irony
It's
ironic that at the time this happened a terrorist warning was
issued that an attacked is expected within months or weeks.
Cost
of Millions of Dollars
I'm
puzzled. It would cost nearly millions of dollars to take the
crosses off. The county and city are hard pressed to keep funding
of human services budgets.
What's
the Damage?
As
far as I know, for decades a cross on the emblem never harmed
anyone while acknowledging the Christian heritage of Los Angeles.
A heritage built on faith, sacrifice, honor and compassion for
our fellow man.
Dechristianization?
It
appears this is another step toward the attempted dechristianization
of Los Angeles and America. It will succeed if people of faith
do nothing.
Truth
in Heritage
Understanding
our Christian heritage, how it impacts on our local and national
heritage is important.
An
important question to ask is "where we derive our rights"?
Government? If its government then what the government gives the
government can take. Remember the Soviet Union, Communist China,
and of course Saddam Hussein.
On
the other hand, as the founding fathers clearly stated "we
are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights."
Again at the conclusion they state: "We therefore...submit
the rectitude of our intentions to the Supreme Judge of the World..."
Who
is Offended?
This
attempt to eliminate the cross is an affront to millions of Los
Angeleno christians who are Hispanic, Mexican-Americans, African
Americans, and people of faith of a broad spectrum of ethnicities.
It
is affront to those millions of people who want to maintain the
symbols of historicity portraying the accurate and honest heritage
which made Los Angeles great.
Revisionist
History?
To
expunge the cross from the Los Angeles County symbol appears to
be a step to expunge the historical impact the Christian faith
had and has on Los Angeles. Is this revising history?
